GILBERT BURNS believes a title shot will be in the offing for himself or Khamzat Chimaev if they make a statement in their welterweight showdown.
The Brazilian has been tasked with welcoming the undefeated phenom to the upper echelons of the stacked 170lbs division next weekend at UFC 273 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Chimaev has been on a tear since entering mixed martial arts’ premier promotion but has yet to break a sweat in his four octagon victories.
And Burns believes the welterweight title – which champion Kamaru Usman will defend against Brit Leon Edwards in the summer – will be within touching distance for either men should they win in dominant fashion at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
When asked if he reckons a win over ‘Borz’ will bag him a second crack at welterweight gold, The Love Hemp Ambassador told SunSport: “I would love to say yes, but that’s out of my control.
“Especially with Leon Edwards coming very hard against Kamaru Usman.

“He might get the win right there. And another thing I believe is true [going into the fight], is the performance.
“It depends on the performance. With a finish, me or Chimaev, with a finish, yeah, I think a title fight [is next].
“With a normal win, a regular win, no. I think [it’ll be] one more fight.”
Burns, 35, reckons the divisive Colby Covington could very well bag a third fight with Usman if he or Chimaev fail to win in impressive fashion.

He said: “It might be Colby there. I think nowadays it’s about [the] performance.
“I think if one of us goes [out] there and shocks the world, yeah, a title shot.
“If not, if it’s a split decision or a very tough fight for both and not as entertaining as people thought [it would be], for sure, one more fight [to get a title shot.”
Burns is focused solely on what he can control inside the octagon but admits the prospect of Edwards dethroning Usman and delaying his plans to fight for the belt again is also on his mind.
He continued: “The way I see it, it’s all about [the] performance. So that’s what I’m focused on right now.

“I gotta go out there and get a finish and perform my best. And then we will see [what happens].
“Because the best scenario is [I] go out there and get a second-round finish and if Leon Edwards beats Kamaru, boom, rematch.
“I’m not gonna wait another six or eight months, I’m gonna get the next guy in line.
“That’s why I cannot control that, it’s not in my control.
“What I can control is my training, my performance and make sure I go out there and perform my best.”
