He said Turkey had launched several cross-border air and ground operations against the PKK over the past few decades. The latest operations were carried out targeting their bases in the Matina, Zap and Awasin-Basyan regions of northern Iraq. “Our campaign is going according to plan,” Akar said. The goals set in the first phase have been achieved.
No information was available on the number of troops and aircraft
The number of troops and aircraft involved in the operation has not yet been announced. “We have been committed to our great nation for over 40 years to save our country from the scourge of terrorism,” Aker said. The United States and the European Union have declared it a terrorist organization. The PKK took up arms against Turkey. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which in the past has been concentrated mainly in southeastern Turkey. Turkish officials have privately said they believe Baghdad is on their side in the fight against the PKK, which has also been designated a terrorist group by the US and the European Union.
