The virus is spreading rapidly in countries where it has never been seen before. Not only this, its cases are seen most among men who have sex with men. Khetarpal said, ‘The World Health Organization today called on countries in the South-East Asia region to strengthen surveillance and public health measures for monkeypox. Monkeypox has also been declared a public health emergency.
Spread to more than 70 countries
Earlier on Saturday, the WHO declared the outbreak of monkeypox in more than 70 countries an emergency and declared the disease a global emergency. WHO also emphasized the need to develop a vaccine for monkeypox. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus declared a global emergency despite a lack of consensus among members of the World Health Organization’s Emergency Committee. This is the first time that the head of WHO has taken such action.

‘Monkeypox’ has spread all over the world including India
Tedros said, ‘We are dealing with an epidemic that has spread rapidly around the world through new modes of transmission and we have very little information about this disease. He said, ‘I know this is not an easy or straightforward process and therefore the members of the committee have different views.’ Monkeypox is known to have been present in many parts of Central and West Africa for decades. However, an outbreak on such a large scale has never been seen outside the continent of Africa. The disease did not even spread among people till May and now it has spread all over the world including India.
