Steel casting is a specialized form of casting using a variety of steels. In cases where cast irons cannot deliver sufficient strength or shock resistance, steel castings are used. The following items are steel castings: hydroelectric turbine wheels, forging presses, gears, railroad car frames, valve and pump bodies, mining equipment, marine equipment, and engine casings. Alloy steel and carbon steel are the two main categories of steel castings.
Steel casting is the process of forming steel into various shapes and molds using a variety of different types of steel. For parts that require shock resistance or are not strong enough, steel casting is commonly used instead of iron casting. Steel casting can be used to produce valves, pumps, engine casings, turbine wheels, as well as an array of different parts used in mining, marine, and automobile equipment.
There is no difference in the benefits of alloy steel and carbon steel when it comes to steel casting. Steel is much stronger than any other kind of metal, can be cast very easily, and is not easily corroded, which makes it very important to a number of construction companies.
The actual process of casting steel into steel cast parts can be done through a variety of methods:
Szekely Method – An alloy of chalk and paraffin is applied to metal molds to create this method. Steel casting is one of the more complex but most popular methods of creating steel molds.
Slavianoff Method – By concentrating on melting steel to create casts, this method is very different from the Szekely method. Steel is melted before being cast on an electric casting plate using the electric alloy steel casting technique.
Sand Core Process – Among the three methods most commonly used, this is the least popular method since many believe that using the other two is more beneficial.
In addition to the above four methods, there are other methods such as Shaw’s method, Norton Fluid Rolling, Bessemer’s method, Whiteley’s method, and Peilsticker and Mueller’s process. However, none of these methods is quite as popular as the above four.
You should conduct thorough research before deciding which method is best for your Steel Cast Parts, since every method has its own advantages.
I recommend that you speak directly with the manufacturer who will be making your parts so you will be able to take their advice as to what will be the most suitable method. Regardless of what method you choose, provided it is the most suitable for the type of steel cast parts you require, you will end up with the best result possible.
