The third season of the musical comedy series “Girls5eva” has found a new home on Netflix after formerly airing on Peacock. The first two seasons’ co-exclusive global streaming rights have also been purchased by Netflix.
The popular series, from Emmy-winning creator-showrunner Meredith Scardino and executive producers Tina Fey (Little Stranger, Inc.), Jeff Richmond, and Robert Carlock (Bevel Gears), stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell as a 1990s one-hit wonder girl group who reunite to pursue their musical ambitions once more. They could be mature women juggling families, careers, debt, ageing parents, and shoulder pain, but they can’t help but be Girls5eva, right?
Our sincere gratitude goes out to Peacock for bringing Girls5eva to life and helping us with our creative endeavors at every stage since the initial concept. And we will always be grateful to our NBCU partners for their unwavering dedication, stated Scardino, Fey, Richmond, and Carlock in a statement. We are excited to announce that our lady group will rejoin at Netflix today. We are so appreciative of everyone at the streamer who enjoyed our musical comedy. We are eager to share Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria with the Netflix audience around the world. To be more precise, Girls5eva may be seen lighting a porta toilet on fire in the Woodstock ’99 documentary’s background if you look closely.
It’s customary for linear originals to go to streaming hubs after being cancelled, but this is a first for the rapidly evolving TV environment. Deadline claims that the decision was challenging for Peacock and that it made executives prioritise other projects.
For “Girls5eva’s” first season, Scardino received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Both seasons had 100% fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, while Vanity Fair, Vulture, the Washington Post, and Paste all named Season 2 as one of the top television programmers of 2022.
Along with Little Stranger’s Eric Gurian, David Miner (3 Arts Entertainment) also acts as executive producer. The production company for Girls5eva is Universal Television, a unit of Universal Studio Group.
