So much can be learned in even a short glance at our physical reflection in the mirror. We can see that our hair is out of place or that we need to reapply our makeup, or maybe we’ll be rewarded with newfound confidence because we notice how vibrant we look today.
Christine McCaffrey is a consultant and coach to many truly transforming lives and this year reflection is full of gold and wisdom!
“People have no problems with checking their physical reflection but ask them to reflect on their emotional or spiritual side, and their brains start to seize up. What on earth does that even mean, they ask.
Unfortunately, most of us never think to reflect on our emotional or spiritual life. Even if we do want to examine it, we can’t figure out how to look at it. Indeed, most of us only decide to look when we feel out of sorts because nothing seems to be going right in our world. Either we are stuck or feel like life is spinning out of control.
Emotional and spiritual reflection is my comfort zone. I am a consultant and personal coach. People hire me when they are looking for a bit of wisdom to help them move forward. My job is to help my clients to reflect, heal, and create. I’m the person who helps you understand how your emotional or creative life is progressing.
One profound understanding I learned early on is that if we don’t stop and reflect on what is happening in the emotional world, we will quickly get lost or end up on a path to nowhere.
The look in the physical mirror helps us notice that we are missing an earring or have something stuck in our teeth, but a reflection on our emotional life will help us realize that we are on the wrong path and need to pivot.
Journal prompts is just one of the “mirror” type tools I use in my work. The journal prompts I have listed below are designed to reflect on the year that just passed, so completing this in January will be particularly effective. Also, just so you know, I have done this review myself for years, and over the last two years I have sent it to my clients, and they’ve responded with feedback that the exercise was “enlightening,” “inspiring,” and “insightful.” So, I’m confident that they’ll be helpful in your emotional reflection mission.
The journal prompts are listed below. I’d suggest you try handwriting and use a full page or more for each one so you can just let the information flow. When you are done, take a few minutes to reflect on what you’ve learned, then carry those insights and wisdom into 2023 as you build a new life that is stronger and brighter:
- Prompt 1: The scariest thing I went through this past year was …
- Prompt 2: The most crucial goal I achieved this past year was …
- Prompt 3: A big mistake I made, and the lesson I learned from it was …
- Prompt 4: I broke out of my comfort zone in 2022 when …
- Prompt 5: The habit I picked up this past year is … (look at good and bad habits)
- Prompt 6: The nicest thing someone did for me this past year was …
- Prompt 7: If I could go back in time to the start of this year, here’s some advice I’d tell myself
I’d love to hear how these prompts worked for you! Please reach out to let me know your experience. My website and contact information are listed below.”
