The US earlier this week sent back a plane full of Indians who had arrived illegally in the US back to Delhi. According to the US Home Department, these Indians had no legal basis to stay in the US and were therefore sent back to India on a chartered flight on October 22.
America is working with India to stop illegal migration
According to Indian government sources, this is due to bilateral cooperation with the US on migration issues. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it will continue to work with its partners like India to prevent and reduce human trafficking and illegal migration. However, the government has not shared any details about the deported Indians and where they are from in India.
1.60 lakh people were repatriated to 145 countries
The US has said it has sent back more than 160,000 people to 145 countries since June 2024. And 495 flights have been operated to repatriate these people. These countries also include India.
The Indian government told the Parliament that in 2023, 96,917 Indians have been caught by the US as illegal immigrants. The Indian government gave this information based on data published by the US Customs and Border Protection.
India and the US hold talks every year to secure safe and legal migration. Both the countries are talking about this matter at the level of High Commissioner.
