BCAS i.e. Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has changed the hand baggage rules for air passengers. The change has been made to reduce congestion during security checks at the airport. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which looks after airport security, has taken the decision in collaboration with BCAS. According to the new rules, passengers will now be able to carry only one hand bag on the plane. This rule is applicable for all domestic and international flights. If you have more than one bag, you must check them in.
According to the new rule, hand bags should not weigh more than 7 kg. This rule is for economy and premium economy class passengers. First and Business Class passengers can carry a hand bag of up to 10 kg. The size of the bag is also fixed. Height should not exceed 55 cm (21.6 inches), length 40 cm (15.7 inches) and width 20 cm (7.8 inches). Overall, the overall size of the bag should not exceed 115 cm. If your bag is larger or heavier than the prescribed limit, you may have to pay an additional fee.
If you have booked your ticket before May 2, 2024, you will get a slight discount. Economy class passengers can carry bags up to 8 kg. There is a discount of 10 kg for Premium Economy and 12 kg for First or Business Class. Keep in mind, this discount is applicable only on tickets booked before May 2, 2024. If you make any changes to your ticket after this date, you must comply with the new rules.
Indigo Airlines has also explained its hand baggage rules. IndiGo passengers can carry one cabin bag, the size of which does not exceed 115 cm and weight up to 7 kg. Additionally, carry a personal bag, such as a lady's purse or a small laptop bag. Its weight should not exceed 3 kg. That means you get to carry two bags in Indigo – a cabin bag and a personal bag.
