Mohammed Yusuf, a US-based Nigerian civil engineer, is making headlines across continents for his groundbreaking research and distinguished contributions to the field of civil engineering.
Recently honored with the prestigious Chairman’s Merit Award 2024 by the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr. Yusuf was recognized for his pioneering research titled “Assessment of Cement Concrete Partially Replaced with Polystyrene and Plantain Peel Ash.” This innovative study explores eco-friendly alternatives to traditional cement by incorporating agricultural and plastic waste—offering a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solution to modern construction challenges.
Mr. Yusuf, a native of Nigeria, holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and a second M.Sc. in Project Management from Northeastern University, The Roux Institute, Portland, Maine, United States. With nearly a decade of experience in civil engineering and project management, he has demonstrated deep technical expertise and leadership on numerous large-scale infrastructure projects.
Between 2019 and 2022, Mr. Yusuf served as a Senior Civil Engineer at AGYS Premium Global Services Limited in Lagos, where he led critical development initiatives involving road networks, drainage systems, and urban planning. Earlier in 2019, he worked with Forsite Limited, also in Lagos, contributing to major structural designs in commercial and residential construction.
Speaking to The London Journal, Yusuf emphasized the motivation behind his research: “Africa faces two simultaneous challenges—waste management and affordable infrastructure. This research addresses both by transforming waste into valuable building material, reducing environmental strain while maintaining structural integrity.”
His commitment to responsible engineering has resonated far beyond Nigerian borders. Yusuf’s work has drawn attention across academic and professional circles in the United States and the United Kingdom, placing him among a growing league of African engineers driving innovation on the global stage.
Colleagues describe him as a results-driven, open-minded team player, known for his analytical acumen and ability to deliver on complex projects under stringent regulatory and safety frameworks. His growing reputation as a thought leader in sustainable construction is seen as a major win not only for Nigeria but for the broader field of civil engineering.
With the demand for green infrastructure rising globally, Mr. Mohammed Yusuf’s contributions represent a critical step forward—proving that the future of construction lies at the intersection of science, sustainability, and social responsibility.
