In the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Bhutan's Prime Minister sharing Tobge has strongly advocated at the Security Council (UNSC). Tobge clearly stated that in view of the changing global realities, qualified countries like India and Japan should get permanent membership.
This statement came at a time when India has been raising this demand for a long time, and the latest BRICS has agreed at the meeting of Foreign Ministers.
Considered India and Japan worthy
Bhutan's Prime Minister said that the UNSC should not only remain showpieces, but be an effective power that faces the real challenges of the world. He said that Bhutan supports UN reforms, including the expansion of the Security Council. The revised security conference should include competent and leading countries like India and Japan.
BRICS also got confirmed
Bhutan's statement came at a time when BRICS countries have also confirmed the demand for India and Brazil for a major role in UNSC. At a recent meeting, China and Russia also recovered that they respect the ambitions of India and Brazil and wanted to see them playing a strong role in the Security Council.
India has long been demanding reforms
India has long been seeking improvement in UNSC and increasing the partnership of Asian and African countries, but this has stopped due to China's opposition. UNSC is one of the six major organs of the United Nations, including five permanent and ten non-permanent members. Permanent members, also known as P5, have veto power. Non-permanent members vary every two years.
Of these five permanent members, India has good and strong relations with everyone except China. France has already supported India's permanent membership. If China does not hinder this, the way of permanent entry into the UNSC may be paved. In fact, nine out of 15 members are required to decide on any issue in USC. However, if one of the permanent members uses its veto power, the proposal/decision is rejected.
