Turkey has issued arrest warrants against 37 Israeli officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. According to the Turkish government, this action has been taken in response to violence and attacks on civilians in the Gaza Strip. Israel has dismissed the allegations as “propaganda”, while Hamas has welcomed Turkey's decision.
List published by Turkey
This move by Turkey has become the subject of international debate after the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office announced that the arrest warrants also include senior officials such as Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Army Chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The full list announced by Turkey is yet to be released.
The Turkish government has gravely accused Israel of committing “systematic genocide and crimes against humanity” in Gaza. The Israeli attack on the “Turkey-Palestine Friendship Hospital” in March has also been made part of the investigation, the statement said.
Earlier, Turkey also supported a case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which accused Israel of genocide.
Turkey called this move a “political stunt”.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called Turkey's move a “political stunt”. He wrote on social media that the Turkish judiciary is now only used to suppress political opponents. He also criticized the Turkish government, referring to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Hamas praised the arrest warrant as a humanitarian step. A Hamas statement said Turkey's move was a reflection of the “high humanitarian values” of its people and leadership.
Debate on Gaza Peace Plan
The incident took place at a time when the Middle East is debating the 20-point Gaza peace plan presented by former US President Donald Trump. The creation of an International Stability Force (ISF) in Gaza is also being considered as part of this plan. However, the vice president of America J.D. Vance has made it clear that any foreign force deployment to Gaza would require Israel's consent.
