A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan. The epicenter was 80 km off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, at a depth of 50 km. A tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit the coasts of Aomori and Hokkaido, and that waves up to three meters (10 feet) high could hit the northeastern coast. No casualties have been reported yet.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a warning that dangerous tsunami waves generated by the earthquake could affect the coasts of Japan and Russia. In addition, any area within a 1,000 km radius of the epicenter is threatened by destructive waves.
Why do earthquakes occur in Japan?
Japan is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. It is located on the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire. This is a region where the Earth's tectonic plates collide, causing frequent earthquakes.

The same region experienced a devastating tsunami in March 2011, after a devastating earthquake, which killed thousands of people. No major damage has yet been reported in today's earthquake, but officials are continuing to monitor the situation and urge people to remain vigilant.
