Nuclear weapons have caused enormous damage to humanity not only in warfare but also in the process of manufacturing and testing them. A new report has made a shocking claim that at least four million people around the world have died prematurely as a result of nuclear weapons testing.
Most of these deaths were caused by cancer, heart disease and genetic disorders. This was revealed in a more than 300-page report by humanitarian organization Norwegian People's Aid (NPA). The report comes as US President Donald Trump has hinted that the US may resume nuclear testing, which experts have called extremely dangerous.
More than 2400 nuclear explosions from 1945 to 2017
According to the report, more than 2400 nuclear tests were conducted worldwide from 1945 to 2017. Of these nine nuclear-armed countries, including Russia, the US, China, France, Britain, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea, only North Korea conducted tests after 1990, but the rest's old tests are still taking their toll.
Effects of radiation on every human body
One of the report's most terrifying claims is that radioactive elements from nuclear tests are still present in the bones of every living human today. This is said by Magdalena Stavovsky, a co-author of the report and a professor at the University of South Carolina.
Atmospheric nuclear testing in particular, which continued until the 1980s, is estimated to have caused 2 million cancer deaths alone. Another two million deaths are believed to be linked to heart attacks and strokes.
Women and children are the most exposed to radiation
The report shows that radiation from a nuclear explosion does not affect everyone equally. Unborn babies and young children were the most affected. Girls and women have a 52% higher risk of radiation cancer than men. Experts say there is no safe limit for radiation. not
Stories of pain from France to the Marshall Islands
French Polynesian MP Hinamoura Cross said she was 7 when France conducted its last nuclear test in 1996. Seventeen years later, she developed leukemia. Her family already had several cases of thyroid cancer. France conducted 193 nuclear tests there, nearly 200 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Likewise, America's Bravo test in 1954, which was 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, covered the entire Marshall Islands in radiation. Children mistook snow for radioactive ash falling from the sky.
Lack of confidentiality and compensation
The report alleges that the countries that conducted the nuclear tests hid the truth for years. Reports from the United States and Britain in Kiribati remain confidential today. It is still unclear where France buried the radioactive waste in Algeria. The report said no nuclear power had formally apologised, and where reparations were offered, they served more as a means of avoiding responsibility than helping victims.
