Batting first, Kolkata scored 137 runs. In reply, the Chennai team achieved the target in 17.4 overs. The hero of Chennai’s win was Jadeja who took 3 wickets for just 18 runs. Kolkata’s first loss
Kolkata Knight Riders were dominating the points table after winning 3 consecutive matches but Chennai Super Kings handed them their first defeat of the tournament. Batting first, the Kolkata team could not make a big score. Phil Salt was dismissed on the first ball. Sunil Narine scored 27 runs and Angkrish Raghuvanshi 24 runs, but both fell prey to Jadeja in the same over, after which Kolkata’s condition deteriorated. Venkatesh Iyer 3, Ramandeep Singh 13, Rinku Singh 9 and Andre Russell scored only 10 runs.
The pitch played a big role
Chepauk’s pitch was also a major reason for Kolkata’s defeat. Chennai captain Rituraj Gaekwad won the toss and chose to field first. In the first innings, the ball was stuck on the pitch, which Chennai bowlers took advantage of. As a result KKR’s stroke players could not play freely. Kolkata also made several mistakes in their batting order. Andre Russell came to the crease with just 20 balls left and thus did not get time to settle on the pitch.
