Out of 70 league matches to be held in IPL 2024, 31 matches have been played. But in the meantime, the impact player rule in the IPL is now under question. Cricket experts feel that this rule is causing a lot of damage to the game and should be withdrawn immediately. He believes that this rule has completely changed cricket. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody has demanded an early end to the experiment.
Questions raised on the impact player rule
The impact player rule allows IPL teams to use additional specialist bowlers or batsmen during matches as per their convenience. Former Australian player Tom Moody has questioned this. And has also demanded to withdraw this rule. Moody said the rule was fine for the trial, but should now be withdrawn. Due to this rule, the balance between the ball and the bat is lost. Simply put, the batsmen are outclassing the bowlers and most of the matches are becoming high scoring. He further said that this rule is also exposing bad strategy and franchise selection, which is hurting the game.
All-rounders are not getting a chance
Many fans have alleged that the affected player rule is affecting all-rounders as well. Teams are trying to use specialist bowlers or batsmen, due to which all-rounders are not getting a chance. Which will also affect the Indian team. The biggest example of this is Shivam Dubey. Chennai Super Kings have used him as an impact player. Although he also bowls, he is only batting and Pathirana is bowling instead. If Shivam Dubey bowls, he can be an alternative to Hardik Pandya, which the Indian team is looking for.
The “impact sub” has been a worthwhile trial but I feel it’s time to revert back to just playing XI’s. The sub has created an imbalance between bat v ball, it also covers up for poor selection and auction strategy. #impactsub #IPL

When did the impact player rule come into existence?
The impact player rule was introduced for the first time in the Indian domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. After experimenting there, it was implemented in the IPL in 2023. The rule has grabbed everyone’s attention since its inception and so far there has been a mixed response.
