A BRAVE schoolboy, 15, was tragically killed after falling 100ft into a quarry while trying to rescue his friend.

The horror unfolded as Myron Davies “instinctively reacted to save” his pal, 14, after she lost her footing at Abersychan quarry in Pontypool, South Wales.

Heartbroken mum Sarah described her son as ‘the most outgoing and happy person’[/caption]

An inquest today in Newport heard how the girl was airlifted from the site in critical condition after the pair had gone to “admire the view” in July 2022.

The schoolgirl, who wishes to remain anonymous, was later discharged from hospital having made a full recovery.

He was the most outgoing and happy person you could ever meet. Everyone who knew him loved being around him

          SarahMyron's mother

Detectives theorised branches in the quarry had cushioned her fall.

She told police Myron was “fine” in himself before tragedy struck, while friends and family confirmed he was a “happy boy” with “no mental health concerns”.

An eyewitness told how he spotted the teens in danger from his garden.

Lloyd Whitelock recalled there was a “slight delay” between Myron and the girl falling.

He told the coroner: “I was in total shock and called 999.

“Having processed it properly there were two people and I’m sure they did not jump.”

The former limestone quarry had been a popular site before the incident but has since been fenced off.

Detective Chief Inspector Leigh Holborn said: “It would have appeared to me that girl was on a slightly lower ledge, she’s slipped, she’s gone down and Myron has gone over.

“A thought process is that she has slipped and Myron has gone to try and help her – an automatic reaction when someone trips in front of you.”

He added how evidence lead the force to believe there was “nothing to suggest a suicide pact”.

Myron’s bag had been packed for school the following day, with his laptop charged up.

          ‘TRAGIC ACCIDENT’

While Coroner Ms Saunders concluded the teen died in “a tragic accident”.

Myron’s medical cause of death was confirmed as multiple injuries.

She said: “Myron instinctively reacted to save her and in the process fell himself.

“The edge of the quarry is a dangerous place to be.

“Children can be blind to these dangers and take more risks than adults.”

It was also concluded there was no third part involvement in Myron’s death and there was no evidence to suggest he intended to end his life.

Myron’s heartbroken mum Sarah said: “He meant the world to me.

“He was the most outgoing and happy person you could ever meet. Everyone who knew him loved being around him.

“As you can imagine as his family we are completely heartbroken and all his friends are devastated as we try to make it through each day.”
