Did you know that under Canada's soil there is a place that has been collecting pressure peacefully for millions of years? Can it suddenly bring a big earthquake? Recently, scientists have discovered a line called 'Tintina Fault' in the Ukon area, which can cause an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude. Let's understand what it is and what we should do.
Tintina fault is a long line, which starts with the urcone and goes to Alaska. Its length is about 1,000 kilometers. It passes through the British Columbia and joins the second main line, forming a valley in the southern Canada. Millions of years ago, the line was overwhelming, but has been quiet for the last 12,000 years.
Scientists found that the fault was slowly collecting pressure. Over the last 26 million years, on both sides of it has slipped 1,000 meters. In the last 1.36 lakh years, 75 meters. It moves a little each year. There is so much pressure that an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 can occur. This earthquake can occur at any time, maybe in our lifetime. Scientist Theron Finley says this is an old weak place, which accumulates the pressure of the earth and suddenly torn.
Scientists used satellites and lidar (which shows the land to ignore the forest). They saw high places (scarp) on the ground, which is traces of an old earthquake. Snow marks show that it was shaken for 12,000 years, 1.32 lakh years and 26 million years ago. Now 6 meters of pressure is collected, which is sufficient for the earthquake.
The earthquake can damage small villages, such as Dawson City (where 1,600 people live). There is also the danger of landslides in mines and mountainous areas. But this area is already known for the earthquake, so fear is not considered too big. Nevertheless, caution is necessary.
No one can say when it will explode. It may take more years or it may come suddenly.
Scientists will have to dig a pit in fault and find out about the old earthquake. “We do not even know that the 6 meter pressure is too high or more is yet to be collected,” says Finley.
