Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi said yesterday, Wednesday, that during 'Operation Sindoor', the Indian Navy came very close to attacking Pakistan by sea – minutes away from attacking – when it received a request from Islamabad to stop kinetic actions.
It came very close to attacking Pakistan by sea
Navy chief Tripathi was speaking at a naval felicitation ceremony in Mumbai, where he awarded the 'Yuddh Seva Medal' to two senior naval officers for their distinguished service during 'Operation Sindoor', which was launched after the terror attack in Pahalgam in April last year. During his address, he remarked that Operation Sindoor showed the readiness and resolve of the Indian Navy, as its units undertook rapid deployment and maintained a very aggressive attitude throughout the operation.
Request received from Pakistan: Admiral
Regarding the Navy's role in the operation, Admiral Tripathi said, “It is no longer a secret that we were minutes away from attacking Pakistan by sea, although, at the same time, there was a request from them to cease military operations.” He further added that through its capabilities demonstrated during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Navy has strengthened the faith and trust of the nation.
Speaking on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the admiral noted that since the outbreak of hostilities with the US, Israel and Iran, more than 20 merchant ships have been attacked in the region. He stressed that amid this highly stressful environment, approximately 1,900 ships are stranded, and daily traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has also been adversely affected. Before the start of the war, this important waterway saw a daily traffic of 130 ships; This figure has now come down to just 6 to 7 ships per day.
The Sea is no longer a secondary battlefield: Admiral
The naval chief added, “While the global order has undergone significant changes due to increasing fragmentation and conflict, seas are no longer merely secondary battlegrounds where continental conflicts unfold. Instead, they are increasingly becoming arenas where strategic intentions are signaled and fought out – often with asymmetric results.”
He noted that ever-evolving technologies and strategies have not only reshaped the way war is planned, initiated and sustained, but have also made the task of dealing with non-traditional challenges more complex and unpredictable. He added that in a single year, the Navy has commissioned 12 ships and submarines.
