Standfirst: Britain’s crumbling roads cost drivers billions a year in tyres, wheels and suspension. But there’s a quieter bill nobody puts a figure on — and it lands on your paintwork.
Ask anyone who’s hit a pothole hard what it cost them and they’ll tell you about the wheel. The buckled rim, the shredded tyre, the tracking that was never quite right afterwards. What they won’t mention — because most people never connect the two — is the scattering of tiny chips that appeared across the bonnet that same winter, and the £500 bodyshop quote that turned up eighteen months later when they came to sell the car.
Britain’s pothole crisis is usually told as a story about suspension. It’s also a story about paint, and that half of it goes almost entirely unreported.
A network with no realistic route back
The numbers are not in dispute. The 2026 Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey, published in March by the Asphalt Industry Alliance, put the backlog of carriageway repairs in England and Wales at a record £18.62 billion — a figure that would take an estimated twelve years to clear even if the money appeared tomorrow. Local authorities filled around 1.9 million potholes over the year at a cost of £149.3 million. Roads are resurfaced, on average, roughly once every 97 years.
The AIA’s own chair described the state of local roads as a national disgrace. The AA reported attending 137,000 pothole-related incidents in January and February 2026 alone, some 25,000 more than the same period the previous year.
Drivers know. RAC research ahead of National Pothole Day 2026 found the condition of local roads is now the single biggest motoring concern in the country, cited by 47% of drivers ahead of every other complaint. The RAC’s own index puts the average encounter rate at around six potholes per mile.
What matters for your paint isn’t the holes themselves, though. It’s what a failing road surface throws at the car behind.
Why bad roads attack paintwork specifically
A road in good condition is a sealed, bound surface. A road that’s breaking up is a loose one — and loose is the operative word.
When a carriageway starts to fail, the aggregate that binds it comes free. Every vehicle that passes flicks that grit up and out. The same applies, doubly, to the “patch and dash” repair — the hurried fill that survives a few weeks before disintegrating and depositing its contents across the lane. In the Select Car Leasing Great British Pothole Poll 2026, 70% of drivers said that when potholes in their area were repaired, the fixes were failing within days or weeks. Every one of those failures is a fresh handful of loose stone sitting on a road at 60mph.
The result is a projectile problem. Stone chips on bonnets, bumpers, wing mirrors, A-pillars and the leading edge of the roof aren’t random bad luck — they’re the predictable output of a surface that no longer holds itself together, and they concentrate exactly where the airflow drives debris hardest.
There’s supporting evidence in the repair data. Kwik Fit’s Pothole Impact Tracker, which has monitored the cost of pothole damage since 2013, has found bodywork featuring in around one in eight pothole-related repairs — a component category most drivers wouldn’t associate with road defects at all.
Then there’s winter. Rock salt and grit are abrasive going down and corrosive once they’re there, and they find every break in the paint film. A chip that would have stayed cosmetic in July becomes a rust site by March. The two problems compound: worse roads produce more chips, and Britain’s winters ensure those chips don’t stay small.
The bill, and why it arrives late
Pothole damage is expensive in the ordinary way. Kwik Fit put the national repair bill at a record £1.8 billion over the past twelve months, affecting 12.8 million drivers at an average of £137.40 each. Close Brothers Motor Finance, using a broader definition, estimates £3.3 billion a year with an average repair of £341. The RAC calculates that anything worse than a puncture on a typical family car averages £590.
Paint is different, because it doesn’t present as a bill. It presents as a deduction.
Current UK cost guides put a single bonnet respray at roughly £400 to £600, a localised stone chip repair at £120 to £180, and a full respray anywhere from £1,500 to £2,900 and beyond depending on the vehicle and finish. But the cost most drivers actually pay is invisible: the trade-in valuation that comes in lower than expected, on a car that looks tired at the front end because it has spent four years commuting on a road surface with five years of structural life left in it.
Nobody sends you an invoice for that.
What actually works — and what doesn’t
There is no product that fixes British roads. There are things that change what happens when the road hits your car.
Paint protection film — a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane layer applied over the factory paint — is the option purpose-built for impact rather than shine. Where a wax or sealant adds microns of sacrificial gloss, a modern film is typically around 8 mil thick and absorbs the strike before it reaches the paint. Better films self-heal light marks with heat and are hydrophobic, which matters more than it sounds in a country that salts its roads for four months a year: less contamination clinging on means less sitting against the surface.
It isn’t cheap, and it isn’t for every car. A partial front-end application — bonnet, bumper, wings, mirrors, headlights — covers the panels that take the overwhelming majority of road debris, and for most drivers is the sensible version. Full-body coverage makes sense on higher-value vehicles where the paint represents real money.
If you’re getting quotes, four questions separate a serious job from an upsell:
- Is it TPU or PVC? TPU is the modern material. Cheaper PVC films yellow and go brittle.
- Is the warranty manufacturer-backed and transferable? A “lifetime guarantee” that lives and dies with a single installer is worth very little, and a transferable warranty is an asset when you sell.
- Is the film wrapped into the edges or cut on the panel? Bonded edges last. Visible cut lines collect dirt and lift.
- Is the installer certified by the film manufacturer, and can you see their work? Pattern-cut installation from a manufacturer template is not the same job as freehand trimming on your bonnet.

And the honest caveat: film is a poor investment on a car you’re changing in a year, on paint that’s already chipped and unprepared, or as a substitute for washing the car in winter. It protects paint. It doesn’t protect wheels, tyres, suspension or your patience.
Twelve years is a long time
The most sobering figure in the ALARM report isn’t the £18.62 billion. It’s the twelve years — and that assumes funding holds and the weather cooperates, neither of which has been a safe bet lately.
For the driver, that’s the whole point. The roads that are chipping your paint this winter will be chipping it in 2030. Whatever you decide to do about that, it’s a decision that belongs to you rather than to your council.
