The British startup is opening early access to a human-led distribution platform built around a simple idea: let brands say what they need to happen, then let people who can make it happen choose the work.
For most of the internet era, starting a business has been getting easier.
A company can incorporate online, build software without a large engineering team, manufacture in smaller quantities, open an online shop in an afternoon, take payments globally and create a respectable brand with tools that would once have required an agency.
Getting somebody to buy the thing is another matter.
That gap is what a new British company called Patna is trying to build around.
Patna describes itself as the human-led distribution platform. Its premise is that brands should be able to turn the result they need into an open piece of commercial work, and that independent people who know how to reach the right market should be able to choose that work and get paid when it works.
That person might be a salesperson. They might run a community. They might make content, know a particular industry, sell into local businesses, make introductions, operate a newsletter, distribute physical products or simply have access to the exact group of people a brand is struggling to reach.
Patna puts those different forms of distribution in the same place.
Distribution is already a very large economy. It just rarely looks like one.
The idea arrives at an interesting moment for British business.
The Department for Business and Trade estimated that the UK had 5.64 million small businesses at the beginning of 2025. London alone accounted for roughly 1.04 million private-sector businesses.
At the same time, performance-based partnerships have become serious commercial infrastructure. The Affiliate & Partner Marketing Association says UK brands invested £1.8 billion in affiliate and partner marketing in 2025, generating £20.7 billion in tracked revenue.
Patna’s argument is that the behaviour behind those numbers is much wider than the affiliate link.
A useful introduction can distribute a product. So can a sales call. A recommendation inside a trusted professional group can do it. A creator can do it. A distributor can do it across a city. A consultant may know the one buyer a company has spent months trying to reach.
Today, those people tend to live inside entirely different systems, if there is a system at all.
Patna wants to give the work a common infrastructure.
A campaign starts with something that has to happen
A brand coming to Patna does not simply post an advert asking people to “promote” it.
It creates a campaign.
That campaign might ask for paid customers, booked meetings, activated accounts, product orders, qualified registrations, introductions or another result that can be clearly defined.
The brand sets the market, the conditions, what will count and how much the work is worth.
Partners can then discover campaigns and decide which ones fit what they actually know how to do.
That distinction matters.
Patna is not assigning strangers a list of products and telling them to sell everything. It is attempting to create a market in which somebody who knows healthcare can choose healthcare work, somebody with relationships in hospitality can use those relationships, and somebody good at business development can focus on campaigns that require business development.
“We don’t think everybody needs to become an influencer to be commercially useful to a brand,” says Patna founder Kingston Stratis. “A person might know an industry, a neighbourhood, a community, twenty business owners or exactly one person. If they can genuinely help a good product reach the people it needs to reach, that ability has value.”
The software sits behind the human work
Calling Patna “human-led” is deliberate, but it is not a rejection of technology.
Quite the opposite.
Behind the campaign marketplace is the less glamorous infrastructure required to make human distribution manageable: tracking, attribution, campaign rules, lead research, CRM, conversations, verification, earnings records and payment infrastructure.
A partner researching a market can find companies and relevant people inside Patna, keep the ones worth pursuing in their CRM and record what happens next. Leads assigned through a campaign are protected against being handed to another partner through the same campaign allocation path.
A brand can define in advance what constitutes a valid result rather than deciding after the work has been done.
Different campaigns can verify results differently. An online order might be attributed through a tracked route. A booked meeting may be verified against the campaign’s qualification rules. An introduction may need to reach a particular type of decision-maker.
Once a result is confirmed, it enters Patna’s record of what the partner has earned and follows the campaign’s clearance and settlement process.
The ambition is to turn something traditionally held together by links, spreadsheets, inboxes, messages and trust into an operating system without removing the human being who created the result.
“Human-led does not mean low-tech,” Stratis says. “It means the technology should organise people rather than pretend people are no longer necessary. The relationship, the judgement, the recommendation and the conversation still come from a person. Patna should make everything around that easier to run and easier to measure.”
Patna spent four months testing the idea quietly
Before opening the platform more widely, Patna says it ran a four-month pilot involving 14 small brands across four countries, every one of them with fewer than five employees.
The company says $229,875 was generated during the pilot.
More than nine of the participating brands recorded what Patna describes as their strongest revenue period in two years, while most recorded a measurable result within 48 hours of setting up their campaign.
Some of the more revealing results were not simply sales.
In one campaign, a chief executive was introduced to a government official the company says they had been trying to meet for three years.
In another, a content creator secured an 11-month brand partnership. The arrangement continued beyond Patna’s original pilot period and is still being managed and paid through the platform.
Those cases have influenced how the company talks about distribution.
A product moving does not always mean a parcel moving.
Sometimes it means reaching a customer. Sometimes it means getting into a room.
Why not just call this affiliate marketing?
Because Patna is deliberately trying to accommodate work that a conventional affiliate programme does not.
Affiliate links remain useful, but their limitations are well understood. UK Government research into social-media creators found that some creators regarded affiliate commissions as too small to be worthwhile and complained that customers frequently visited a brand directly instead of buying through the link used for attribution.
Patna can still support referral-style campaigns, but a partner does not need an audience or even a public profile to be useful.
A salesperson booking a qualified meeting and a creator generating a purchase are performing different work. Patna’s contention is that both can live inside the same broader category: human-led distribution.
Nor is Patna an agency.
The company is not proposing to assemble one permanent team that executes every campaign. Brands open work to a network, while partners choose which opportunities they want to pursue.
And it is not a job board. Partners are not applying to become employees of the brands whose campaigns they work on.
The difficult part may be the marketplace itself
Two-sided marketplaces have a familiar problem.
Partners do not want to join a platform with no worthwhile campaigns. Brands do not want to launch campaigns on a platform with no capable partners.
Patna is therefore not throwing its doors open to everyone at once.
The company is accepting brands and partners in batches during early access, with the stated aim of keeping both sides of the marketplace reasonably balanced as it grows.
For partners, the proposition is unusually straightforward:
Help good brands reach the right people. Get paid for the work that works.
For brands, it is the inverse: decide what useful progress is worth, then give capable people a reason to make it happen.
“There are millions of small businesses that do not need another dashboard telling them they need growth,” Stratis says. “They need customers, meetings, introductions, orders and people who can actually help create them. That is the layer we want Patna to become.”
Whether Patna can make a new category out of behaviours that already happen every day will depend on whether enough brands and enough capable people decide that bringing those behaviours together is better than continuing to manage them separately.
But the underlying bet is easy to understand.
The internet became very good at helping people make things.
Patna is betting there is still a very large business in helping those things move.
