Anti-government protests have started again in Bangladesh. Thousands of people took to the streets once again on Saturday. The protest that started against reservation has now come to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. So far 72 people have died in violence between protesters and pro-authority supporters. The home ministry has imposed an indefinite curfew in the country following the resurgence of violence.
However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has assured that she will investigate the deaths in the protests and that the culprits will be severely punished. The people who participated in these demonstrations raised slogans against the policies of the government and Sheikh Hasina and demanded justice for those killed. There have also been reports of violence from many places during these demonstrations.
Clashes between government supporters and opponents
While people in Bangladesh took to the streets against government policies and for justice for those killed in protests, pro-government groups also rallied in the city. According to Alo newspaper, government supporters opened fire on demonstrators in Comilla, Bangladeshi media reported that 72 people were killed in the demonstrations. Apart from this, a large number of people have been injured.
The appearances don't stop
Protests erupted in Bangladesh last month against reservations given to families of people associated with the liberation movement. The demonstrations were initially peaceful, but turned violent after clashes between students and police at Dhaka University on 15 July. The government reduced this quota from 30 percent to 5 percent after the Supreme Court's intervention on July 21, but the violence and protests have not stopped. More than 200 people have died and thousands have been injured in the protests so far.
Internet, schools and universities closed
The government has shut down internet services in the country after the violence erupted again. The Home Ministry of Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite curfew across the country from 6 pm. The decision has been taken after large-scale clashes and loss of life in the students' agitation demanding the government's resignation. Apart from this, classes in schools and colleges of the country have also been cancelled. Bangladesh police have arrested 11 thousand people so far.
