Work-life balance is much discussed these days. Infosys founder Narayan Murthy has made several statements about work culture. He advocates working 70 hours a week. Now Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has spoken in a fun and witty manner on the much-discussed issue of work-life balance in the Indian corporate world.
TOI reports Adani emphasized that enjoying your work is very important to achieve work-life balance. “If you spend eight hours with the family, your wife will run away,” he said in an interview to the media. Adani said work-life balance is a matter of personal choice. He further said, “Your idea of work-life balance should not be imposed on me and my idea of work-life balance should not be imposed on you. Suppose a person spends four hours with his family and enjoys it. Or if someone else spends eight hours a day and enjoys it, that's their work-life balance. However, if you spend eight hours with your family, the wife will run away.
It is learned that the Adani Group chairman's comments come amid ongoing debate and discussion over Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's suggestion of a 70-hour work week. Murthy has previously spoken of working up to 90 hours a week during his career and held hard work as a responsibility for those who benefited from government-subsidized education. He emphasized that work-life balance is achieved when a person engages in activities that suit him. Adani said in an interview, “We have no other world than this. Our children also see this and adopt it. They are equally hardworking.”
Adani continued in the interview, “When you do what you love, your work and life balance. For us, both family and work are important; Apart from this we have no other world. Our children also follow this. They are equally hardworking.”
Adani continued in the interview, “Personal character and humility are the most important things. In my opinion, everything else, including your property, is artificial. What you eat, I eat the same. Money gives you the power to decide what and how you can use it to affect. Everyone is going through a journey in life. No one is here to stay permanently. When one understands this, life becomes easier.
