The shipbuilding sector in India has long been struggling due to lack of policy, capital and technology. Now the government is all set to take this sector to a whole new level. The central government has announced guidelines for two major schemes related to shipbuilding Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS) and Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS). A total of ₹ 44,700 crore will be invested under these two schemes, which can directly benefit the country's shipbuilding companies and their associated shares.
Government has allocated ₹24,736 crore under Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme. Under this scheme, shipbuilding companies will get financial assistance ranging from 15% to 25% per ship. Different amounts of assistance have been established for small, large and special category vessels. Shipbuilding projects worth around ₹96,000 crore are expected to be supported under the scheme over the next ten years, which will provide a major boost to both production and employment.
