After almost 5 months of long monsoon this year, now once again unseasonal rains have increased the problems of farmers. Areas including Maroli and Vesma in Navsari district have received unseasonal rain. The situation has become worrisome for farmers as they fall during the important flowering and fruiting season of horticultural crops. There is a fear of major damage to the mango crop in particular.
Cold at night and hot during the day
December and January are very important months for horticultural crops. During this period, mangoes are set on amr manjari, while fruits on chiku trees begin to grow. Cool nights and hot days naturally increase fruit size, which is considered favorable for production.
The state Meteorological Department has predicted unseasonal rains during December 31 and January 1. According to it, rain has been recorded in Maroli-Navsari road area and Vesma and surrounding horticultural areas of Navsari district. This rain is proving to be an enemy for the farmers as it falls during the important period of blooming of mangoes.
Due to unseasonal rains there is a possibility of blackening of amr manjari, fading of bloom and negative impact on fruit setting process. December and January are considered to be critical months which determine the number of blooms and the yield of the entire season. The rain during this period has become a concern of the farmers.
Horticultural crops are grown in an area of 70,000 hectares.
After the forecast, the agriculture department issued instructions to the farmers to be alert, but the possibility of damage has increased due to large-scale fall of amr manjari in open paddies. About 70,000 hectares of horticultural crops are grown in Navsari district, with mango and chiku being the largest.
Due to the sudden change in weather, there is a fear of direct impact on mango and chiku crops. Now the farmers are making efforts to save the crops with the hope that the weather will improve in the coming days.
