Shreyas Iyer has been given a big responsibility ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand. Iyer has suddenly been made the captain of the team. Iyer has been handed the captaincy of Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
'Shardul Thakur' is out
Earlier, Shardul Thakur was captaining Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Now Iyer will take charge of the team in his place. Shardul Thakur has been ruled out of this domestic 50-over tournament due to injury. In such a situation, Iyer has got this big responsibility.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) disclosed this information in a statement on January 5. Vijay Hazare has made Shreyas Iyer the captain of the Mumbai team for the remaining league matches of the trophy, MCA said in an official statement.
Iyer's experience will come in handy
After dropping Shardul Thakur, the team management has put faith in veteran middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. Iyer has good captaincy experience at the domestic and international level, which is expected to give Mumbai a boost in the crucial matches of the tournament.
Iyer's continued captaincy after the VHT League stage will depend on whether the BCCI declares him fit for international duty. Iyer has been included in the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11 in Baroda.
Iyer's fitness 'worry' for Indian team
While announcing the ODI squad recently, the BCCI said that Iyer's fitness will be assessed at the Center of Excellence and if declared fit, he will be included in the ODI squad.
Will lead the team in 2 league matches
If Iyer is cleared to return to international cricket, the Cricket Association will have to appoint a replacement captain for the VHT Knockouts starting on January 12. “We will take a decision once the situation is clear,” said MCA secretary Unmesh Khanwilkar. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league matches.
