Indian cricket team will play their first international series against New Zealand in 2026. Team India for this three-match ODI series has already been announced. However, one player was included in the squad with fitness-related conditions. Now the player is all set to play after getting the green signal from BCCI's Center of Excellence (CoE).
Team India's middle order batsman and V-captain Shreyas Iyer has got a big relief. According to media reports, BCCI's CoE has declared him fully fit. With this, his return for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand is considered almost certain. Notably, the approval has come ahead of schedule, with his recent innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy impressing the medical team.
Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury while fielding during the Sydney ODI against Australia in October last year. He injured his shoulder when he fell while trying to catch, due to which he had to be hospitalized. Due to this injury, he was away from cricket for almost three months. Shreyas returned to domestic cricket after a long rehabilitation.
Shreyas Iyer, who captained Mumbai, played a storming innings of 82 runs off 53 balls batting at No.4 against Himachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After his innings, the medical team was satisfied and he was declared fit for the New Zealand series.
Shubman Gill will lead Team India in the ODI series against New Zealand. However, the return of Shreyas Iyer is likely to change the playing eleven. Ruturaj Gaekwad, playing at number 4 during Iyer's absence, performed well and also scored his maiden ODI century. Now Ruturaj may have to sit out after Shreyas' availability.
