An important change has come up regarding IPL 2026. The BCCI is set to announce the schedule for the upcoming season in two phases. It is believed that this decision is being taken keeping in mind the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam.
Schedule of matches for first 2 to 3 weeks
The upcoming IPL season is expected to be held between March 26 and May 31. But the election is likely to create difficulties in security arrangements and planning. So BCCI will announce the schedule of first 2 to 3 weeks of matches and then announce the rest of the matches.
Effect of assembly elections
The first phase is likely to consist of around 20 to 25 matches. These matches will be held in states where assembly elections are not scheduled. The schedule for the first phase may be announced by the end of February.
The schedule for the second phase will be announced in March
The schedule for the second phase is likely to be announced in mid-March. The BCCI will decide the venue and dates for the remaining matches after the polling dates are announced by the Election Commission. In this way security related problems can be avoided in electoral states.
Difficult to provide security during elections
State police have special responsibility during elections. So Kolkata's Eden Gardens and Chennai's MA. Providing security at large grounds like the Chidambaram Stadium can be difficult. For this reason the BCCI wants to avoid holding matches at these venues on election days.
Elections in Assam too
Another challenge this time is that Barsapara Stadium in Assam's Guwahati was used as an alternative when there was an obstacle in Kolkata earlier. But this option may be limited as elections are also to be held in Assam.
IPL shortly after T20 World Cup
Also, the IPL is scheduled to start shortly after the completion of the T20 World Cup 2026. So it is necessary to give enough time to the support staff to prepare the grounds again. BCCI is preparing for IPL 2026 with a well-planned plan keeping all the scenarios in mind.
