US Congressman Lindsay Graham recently claimed that Donald Trump's administration may now target Cuba. During a conversation with a news channel, Graham said that the fall of the communist government of Cuba is imminent and the current regime may end soon. He also stated that Cuba's “days are numbered”.
Graham described Trump as a president with an aggressive stance on foreign policy. He referred to the actions taken against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and said the Trump administration is cracking down on issues like narco-terrorism. Regarding American and Israeli actions against Iran, he also claimed that the campaign was linked to the long-term objective of undermining the Iranian government.
Decades of tension between the US and Cuba
Tensions between the US and Cuba began with the Cuban Revolution of 1959. After Fidel Castro took power, a communist government was installed in Cuba, causing a deterioration in relations between the two countries. The US imposed an economic embargo on Cuba, much of which remains in place today.

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 was the most dangerous phase between the two countries. The world teetered on the brink of nuclear war, but a diplomatic settlement eventually averted the crisis. However, US-Cuba relations have not been completely normalized.
Attempts to mend relationships and renewed tension
In 2014, President Barack Obama began efforts to improve relations with Cuba. Diplomatic relations were restored between the two countries and some economic and travel restrictions were eased. However, Donald Trump later re-imposed tougher sanctions, further straining relations.
Cuba's close ties with Venezuela have also become a concern of the US in recent years. The US accuses the Cuban government of violating human rights and avoiding democratic reforms. On the other hand, Cuba claims that the US sanctions have seriously damaged its economy.
Venezuela supplies Cuba with a large supply of oil, and this interdependence is also an important cause of geopolitical tension. Given the current situation, international debate on the next steps in US foreign policy has intensified.
