In France, cyber hackers hacked the entire system of a supermarket and raised the temperature of several fridges to more than 50 degrees Celsius overnight. Around 150 fridges of various supermarkets caught fire due to this shocking incident of hacking. The Paris prosecutor’s office says the hacker attack affected smart and connected refrigerators at leading food retailers across France.
Apart from France, similar fridge hacking incidents have also come to light in Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium. All these countries are currently investigating whether Russia is behind this major cyber attack?
According to local media, the French Prime Minister’s Office has ordered a high-level investigation into the matter and has also contacted other European countries. According to a report by The Guardian, Les Musketeers, the company that owns the Intermarche retailer, said all the fridges were heated to 50 degrees Celsius for about six hours.
6 major supermarkets were targeted
According to reports, the hackers targeted 6 major supermarkets in France, including Carrefour, Monoprix, Auchan, Intermarche and e-Leclerc. E-Leclerc is France’s largest supermarket chain and several refrigerators were targeted there as well. However, most supermarket companies have so far refrained from making an official statement.
How Hacked Fridge?
Hackers hacked the central system of the supermarket and put the refrigeration system of the stores on forced defrost (defrost) mode. This caused the temperature of the fridge to rise one by one and suddenly the temperature of hundreds of fridges crossed 50 degrees Celsius. The main intention of the hackers was to turn the fridge into an oven.
Despite all the efforts of the companies, the entire refrigeration system remained under the control of the hackers for about 6 hours. After the situation returned to normal, the companies had to throw away all the spoiled food. Danish company Danfoss clarified that only fridges running older firmware versions were targeted and had already alerted customers to security updates.
