Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said the Department of Pensions and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) has introduced amendments in the Central Civil Service (Pension) Rules, 2021 to allow family pension to women government employees or pensioners in their character. He said the amendment would address situations where marital discord leads to divorce proceedings or cases are filed under laws such as the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence, Dowry Prohibition Act or the Indian Penal Code.

The order said that if a woman employee is a widower and has no eligible children, family pension shall be payable to the widower. However, if the widower is the guardian of a minor child or a child suffering from mental disorder, family pension shall be payable to the widower as long as he remains the guardian.
Jitendra Singh said that a series of governance reforms have been initiated under the Prime Minister to provide an enabling environment for working women. The Minister said that the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has made concerted efforts to increase the representation of women in central government jobs and provide them with a balance between professional and family life.
