Hijab and burkha were banned in Iran in 1936 during the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi. This was a very revolutionary step in terms of women's freedom. Subsequently, Mohammad Mosaddiq became the Prime Minister in 1952, but was ousted in 1953.
After this, Reza Pahlavi became the leader of the country. During Reza Pahlavi's reign, the hijab and burqa were also banned, but after that men prevented women from leaving the house. He relaxed this rule a bit, but he was in favor of western civilization.
People started calling Reza Pahlavi the 'puppet' of America. His opponent at the time was Ayatollah Ruhollah Khamenei. In 1964, Pahlavi exiled Khamenei. Then in 1973 crude oil prices started to fall in the international market. Due to which Iran's economy started collapsing. By September 1978, public outrage erupted.
Khamenei returned to Iran in February 1979. Even after Bakhtiar became Prime Minister, the protests did not stop. Meanwhile, Khamenei appointed Mehdi Bazargan as interim prime minister. Now there were two Prime Ministers in the country. Gradually the government was getting weaker. There was division in the army too. But gradually everyone from the army to the masses started bowing to Khame.
A referendum was held in Iran in March 1979. In which more than 98 percent of people voted in favor of making Iran an Islamic Republic. As soon as Khamenei came to power, work on the new constitution began. The new constitution was based on Islam and Sharia. After the new constitution, Sharia law came into force in Iran. Several restrictions were imposed. Freedom of women was taken away. Now they were required to wear hijab and burkha, under which the authorities have the right to jail women up to 60 years of age if they come out without a hijab.
