Former chief of Pakistan's intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed has been arrested by the Pakistan Army. Faiz Hameed's arrest has been confirmed by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the propaganda arm of the Pakistan Army. He is considered close to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
During Imran Khan's government, there was also talk of making Faiz Hamid the next army chief, however, the plan did not materialize due to his coup. Faiz Hameed was also accused of destabilizing the civilian government of Afghanistan and helping the Taliban take over Kabul.
What did the Pakistani army say?
ISPR said that following the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a detailed inquiry was conducted by the Pakistan Army to find out the veracity of the complaints made in the Top City case against Lt. Gen. (retd) Faiz Hameed. ISPR also said that appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated against the former chief of the spy agency under the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act.
It said that several cases of violation of the Pakistan Army Act have also been filed against the former general after his retirement. Faiz Hameed also served as Peshawar Corps Commander.
Preparing for Faiz Hameed's court martial
Field General Court Martial proceedings have been initiated and Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has been taken into military custody, ISPR said in a release. Faiz Hameed will be dismissed from the army as soon as the court martial is held and all government facilities available to him will be stopped.
It is believed that this move by the Pakistan Army has been taken to send a message from the armed forces to the supporters of Imran Khan. There are reports that some Pakistani army officers are sympathetic to Imran Khan and are internally supporting his party PTI.
