The T20 match series between India and Bangladesh is starting and with this will be the return of Team India's new T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav. Team India beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in Surya's first series as captain in July. Now for the first time, he will lead Team India as the regular captain on Indian soil.
Discussions about Surya's captaincy have started even before this series. He replaces Hardik Pandya, who was captaining the team till last year and was also the vice-captain in the T20 World Cup. Since then, discussions have started whether Surya can captain Mumbai Indians in the next IPL as well. Before the series against Bangladesh, Surya gave his answer on the possibilities of captaincy in IPL.
In a press conference a day before the match in Gwalior, Suryakumar Yadav was asked about his experience as the captain of Team India and also about his desire to captain any team in the IPL. Apparently the Team India captain did not give a direct answer, but through one of his answers he hinted that he is ready to take on this responsibility in the IPL as well.
According to a PTI report, Surya said that he is enjoying the role. Surya then mentioned Mumbai Indians and said that when Rohit Sharma was the captain of the franchise, if he felt something, he would suggest it to the captain.
What Surya said after this was only 2-3 words but it also hinted that he had or might get the captaincy offer. Surya only said – 'Let's see the rest.' Now the question has arisen that after Team India there is a change in captaincy in Mumbai Indians as well?
Last season itself, the franchise surprised by making Hardik Pandya the captain. There was a big uproar when Rohit was removed from the captaincy and the fans didn't like it either. The Mumbai team finished last in the season. However, India won the T20 World Cup under Rohit's captaincy and after Rohit's retirement, Surya replaced Hardik as captain of the T20 team.
However, speculations are rife that Surya is in touch not only with Mumbai Indians but also with some other franchises. It has also been claimed that despite Kolkata winning the IPL 2024 title, Shreyas Iyer could be traded to Mumbai and Surya could be brought in to captain the franchise.
