“Self-disclosure, or sharing personal experiences and feelings, can build intimacy and trust.”
During a famous ’36 questions’ study, participants were paired up and asked to take turns answering questions which ranged from lighthearted to deeply personal.
The study showed that deep conversations foster closeness significantly more than small talk.

Empathic listening, which involves understanding and validating the other person’s perspective, has been shown to build stronger relationships.
“Listening actively and showing genuine interest in the other person’s thoughts and feelings can make them feel valued and appreciated,” Victoria explains.
Create a romantic atmosphere
Don’t forget that atmosphere is everything too.
Dim lighting and a cosy environment can enhance attraction by making people feel more relaxed and comfortable.
Such settings can also evoke a sense of intimacy and exclusivity, heightening romantic feelings.
Using elements like soft music and candles can significantly enhance the romantic ambience.
Be yourself
Victoria says authenticity is key when dating too.
“Authenticity in relationships is linked to higher levels of trust and emotional intimacy.
“Being genuine and true to yourself can build trust and make the other person feel more connected to you.”
Use body language
Nonverbal cues like leaning in, mirroring their movements and maintaining open body language can signal your interest and create a sense of closeness.

Proxemics, the study of interpersonal distance, shows that closer physical proximity can enhance feelings of intimacy.
“But a word of warning here – there is such a thing as ‘too close’,” Victoria adds.
“For example, there are different zones of interpersonal distance with physical contact to about 18 inches being reserved for close relationships like romantic partners, family and close friends.
“Invading this without the proper context can make people feel uncomfortable or anxious.”
