The ICC has issued a stern warning to Bangladesh that, if they do not go to play in India for the 2026 T20 World Cup, they will be kicked out of the tournament. Scotland may be included in the T20 World Cup tournament instead of Bangladesh.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to inform the Bangladesh government that if Bangladesh continues to refuse to travel to India to play its matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, another team will be included in the tournament instead.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the decision was taken after a poll held by the International Cricket Council, in which only 2 of the 16 ICC board member countries were in favor of the replacement (allowing another team to play in place of Bangladesh). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been given one more day to respond to the ICC on its stance on playing in India. That is, by tomorrow 22nd January 2026, Bangladesh will have to report the final decision on this to the ICC.
If that happens, Scotland could replace Bangladesh in Group C at the World Cup. Scotland failed to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup after finishing behind Netherlands, Italy and Jersey in the European qualifiers.
Future of Bangladesh players in danger
If Bangladesh gets out of the T20 World Cup, it will only hurt its players. Many former cricketers of Bangladesh have expressed this concern to the media. Current T20 captain Liton Das even said that he would not be safe if he spoke on the issue. Current Bangladesh players also want to play in T20 World Cup. The decision now rests with the Bangladesh government. In such circumstances, all eyes will be on Thursday, January 22, what decision the Bangladesh government and the Bangladesh Cricket Association take in this regard.
