The traditional furniture industry of Sankheda village in Gujarat has its own unique identity in the country and abroad. Especially the colorful and elaborate furniture made of teak wood has been exported to foreign countries for a long time. But now the industry is facing serious challenges due to the global situation and the impact of war.
Due to increasing uncertainty and war at the global level, the prices of raw materials required for making furniture are constantly increasing. Cost of production has gone up as raw material imported from abroad becomes more expensive. Also, locally sourced teak wood has also become expensive, making it difficult for small and medium entrepreneurs to continue production.
On the other hand, the decline in demand in the global market has led to a slowdown in ready-made furniture sales. Sankheda furniture, once in high demand abroad, is now falling into stock. Due to this situation, the traders and artisans involved in the industry are facing financial difficulties.
In Sankheda, around 100 families, especially from the Kharadi community, are dependent on this industry. Currently, despite the wedding season, people are not showing interest in buying furniture due to price hike. As a result, orders have fallen and even regular employment of artisans has become a challenge for many industrialists.
Notably, items such as hammocks, chairs, tables and sofas made in Sankheda are world famous for their unique designs and craftsmanship. But in the current situation this traditional industry is struggling between recession and inflation.
If the situation does not improve, it may become more difficult for many families involved in this industry to make a living. This heritage industry of Sankheda is now waiting for help from the government and the market.
