Even after three and a half years in Ranchi, Team India’s fortunes have not changed. After losing to New Zealand at the same ground in 2023, Team India suffered a crushing defeat against West Indies this time. In the second match of the T20 series played at the JSCA Stadium, Team India posted a mammoth score of 249 runs. However, captain Shai Hope’s mighty century and Sherfan Rutherford’s explosive innings saw West Indies surpass the target to set a record and level the series 1–1.
The batsmen in Ranchi created a ruckus
After Lucknow, the batsmen had a good day in Ranchi too, with the bowlers once again struggling. This time, the Indian team faced defeat. Toss proved to be the main reason for this. In the previous match, India won the toss and bowled first, chasing the target and winning. Captain Shreyas Iyer led the team to victory with a century. This time, the story was completely different. India lost the toss and had to bat first. West Indies then won the run chase, Captain Hope scoring a brilliant century.
Team India scored 249 runs
Sanju Samson, who has been a consistent flop in the last few matches, played an explosive innings for Team India. However, benefiting from two lives, Samson scored 82 runs off just 41 balls. Ranchi’s “local boy” Ishan Kishan also contributed well and scored his highest score on this ground. Then came captain Shreyas Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Verma, who put on a blistering 83-run stand in just 33 balls to take the team to 249.

Three wickets from Roston Chase
This is India’s highest score against West Indies. Every bowler of West Indies was giving 10 runs per over. Meanwhile, spinner Roston Chase bowled superbly, taking three wickets for just 24 runs in four overs. Abhishek Sharma, Ishaan Kishan and Shivam Dubey became its victims. This was the reason why the total score of the Indian team remained at 249.
Strong hitting from Hope-Rutherford
On the other hand, West Indies got off to such a poor start that they lost two wickets in the first over against Mayank Yadav’s fast bowling. However, Captain Shai Hope counter-attacked, briefly supported by Rowman Powell. Mayank also sent Powell back to the pavilion. But then came Scharfen Rutherford, who changed the situation. The left-handed batsman not only supported Hope, but batted more aggressively and washed away every Indian bowler.

Second most successful run chase in T20 cricket
Rutherford was given two wickets during this period, and Team India suffered the consequences. Although he did not reach his century, any hope of a victory raised by his dismissal was dashed by captain Hope and Romario Shepherd. The pair scored an unbeaten 74 off just 26 balls and chased down the target of 250 in 18.3 overs to lead West Indies to victory. This is the second most successful run chase in T20 cricket. Hope hit two sixes in the 19th over to complete his century and the team’s win.
