Former Chancellor of Gujarat University Neerja Gupta has once again been caught in the vortex of controversies. A serious allegation of fraud has been leveled against him by sanctioning bills for personal purchases of gold and silver jewelery and expensive bandhani sarees under the university’s ‘Study Abroad Programme’.
According to the claim, purchase bills of ₹59,350 Bandhni saree, 851 grams of silver worth ₹2.29 lakh and gold purchased from a store in Navarangpura were submitted directly to the ‘Study Abroad Programme’ in defiance of rules. It has been alleged that all these bills were passed directly under the signature of the former Chancellor and the then Registrar and the money was transferred to the former Chancellor’s account. The revelation that personal shopping bills were paid out of the academic program budget has caused quite a stir in university circles.
