If you notice a sudden weight gain, it is not necessarily a sign of increased body fat. Excess water in the body can also cause weight gain, which in medical terms is called ‘water weight’ or fluid retention. Not only this, it can also cause problems like bloating (bloating), swelling of the hands and feet and puffiness under the eyes in some people.
Obesity or weight gain is usually caused by excess body fat, but it is not the only cause. Overeating and water imbalance also affect your weight. Dehydration (lack of water in the body), excessive salt intake, bad lifestyle habits or some health related problems can lead to excess water retention in the body.
Our body is made up of approximately 60 to 70 percent water. When the fluid balance in the body is disturbed, the body begins to retain excess water. However, water weight gain is not a serious illness and reducing it does not directly reduce fat, but it definitely reduces abdominal heaviness and bloating.
5 Simple Ways to Reduce Water Wet:
- Drink enough water:
When there is a shortage of water in the body, the body starts to store water defensively. So drink adequate amount of water during the day. It is important to maintain hydration according to season, physical exertion and need.
- Make dietary changes:
Consuming too much salt (sodium) and sugar in food increases the problem of water retention in the body. So keep it limited. Eating foods rich in potassium is beneficial. Also include natural foods like garlic, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, lemon and cucumber in the diet.
- Do regular yoga and exercise:
Regular physical exercise improves blood circulation in the body and excess water gets out through sweat. Gentle yoga also helps in reducing water weight.
- Try Abhyanga Massage:
In Ayurveda, massage with medicated oil is called ‘Abhyanga’. Along with relaxing the body, it activates the lymphatic system and helps to remove toxins and excess water from the body.
- Pay special attention to these things:
If there is persistent swelling in the body for a long time, especially in the ankles or face, do not ignore it as normal. This problem can sometimes be a sign of kidney, heart or liver related problems. In such a situation it is necessary to seek immediate medical examination and advice.
