Companies in India have started to change their approach towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). Until about a year and a half ago, most companies were using AI as small pilot projects. However, many companies are now implementing it on a large scale.
This is also giving them real benefits like saving time and cost. Second, challenges such as cost, shortage of skilled people and infrastructure are still present in the rapid adoption of AI.
Shailendra Kumar, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director of Oracle India, gave this information to news agency PTI. On the occasion of Oracle AI World 2026 (Oracle AI World 2026), he said that about a year and a half ago, companies were talking about AI pilot projects. Now it is being used on a large scale and its benefits are also evident.
Indian companies not ‘hesitating’ to adopt new technology
According to Shailendra Kumar, Indian companies do not shy away from adopting new technologies. They prefer to see first, what will this benefit them? Companies need to understand, will AI save them time or reduce costs? How easy will the way of working be?
He said that earlier companies had many doubts about security and performance. Did they not trust that the new technology would work safely or deliver the expected results? As companies began to see its benefits, they quickly started adopting it.
Cost is one of the biggest challenges in adopting AI
What could slow the pace of AI adoption in India? On this question, Kumar said that cost is definitely a big challenge. Apart from this availability of skilled people and infrastructure are also important issues. Oracle is working with universities, colleges and state governments to address the skills gap.
Under this, training is being given to the students. The initiative also has Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Polytechnic Institutes. Kumar also cited infrastructure as a challenge. He also said that new data centers are being set up in the country and this is helping to overcome this challenge.
Human oversight of AI decisions required
Amidst the growing use of AI, the question is also important, which decisions should AI make and in which cases the role of humans is necessary? On this, Kumar said that governance is most important in the case of AI. Organizations must have people, whether AI is delivering the right results or not? Can check it. Second, is it being used for the purpose for which it was designed? It can also be verified.
Apart from governance at the level of companies themselves, the rules and regulations related to AI will also change over time, he said. Now, as the industry progresses, the regulation will also change. He also mentioned instances of AI models going ‘rogue’ to work outside of their designated boundaries.
‘Oracle’ exists in India for 33 years
He said that Oracle has been operating in India for the last 33 years and has presence in more than 15 cities of the country. The company has been growing at a double digit rate in India for almost 10 years. Oracle’s largest business in India comes from the banking sector. Then there is the place of government sector. He also said that all four telecom companies in India use Oracle’s services.
‘Emphasis’ on increasing speed of business in next 3 to 5 years
Talking about Oracle’s strategy going forward in India, he said that his priority over the next three to five years will be to accelerate the growth of the company’s business. He said, he wants to ensure that; The company’s business will grow faster than the current rate, as it has a lot of potential in the Indian market.
Expressing confidence in India’s economic condition and future prospects, Kumar said that the country is moving in the right direction. But geo-political events are things that cannot be controlled. However, from a country perspective, India’s position is much stronger.
