Renowned Indian-origin Swiss businessman Pankaj Oswal has alleged that his 26-year-old daughter Vasundhara Oswal has been illegally imprisoned in Uganda.
In a letter to Uganda's president, the businessman also claimed that his 26-year-old daughter is being denied basic rights and access to family or legal representation.
According to Oswal, PRO Industries executive director Vasundhara has been detained without trial since October 1 due to “corporate and political manipulation”.
Oswal claims the charges against his daughter stem from false allegations made by a former employee who stole valuables and took out a $200,000 loan with Oswal's family as guarantor.
Oswal has filed an urgent appeal to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, saying Vasundhara was interrogated in degrading conditions and held in custody for more than 90 hours without access to legal counsel or family.
Despite a court order for his unconditional release, the police are said to have framed inadmissible charges to prevent him from being released on bail.
A post on Vasundhara's official Instagram account said, “She is not allowed to be in touch with her family and lawyers and her phone has also been taken away, causing her to suffer from anxiety attacks.”
Pankaj Oswal is a well-known Indian businessman. His wife Radhika Oswal also belongs to the business family. Born in Ludhiana, Pankaj's grandfather Lala Vidyasagar Oswal founded the Oswal Group. Pankaj's father Abhay Kumar Oswal was the founder of Oswal Agro Mills and Oswal Greentech.
After studying from Manipal Institute of Technology, he started helping his father in business. After marriage, Pankaj started Burap Holdings Limited in Australia in 2006. His company was among the giants in liquid ammonia production. Oswal is known as a major player in the petrochemical, real estate, fertilizers and mining sectors.
