Important news has come out for those who want to study, work or get Permanent Residence (PR) in Canada. Canada’s immigration agency Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) claims to have launched an Application Status Tracker (ATS) tool on October 14, 2026. With the help of this tool, eligible applicants will be able to know the status of their immigration application more easily. However, details about this new facility and its availability need to be confirmed on IRCC’s official website.
Information has been provided through this tracker to check the status of Study Permit, Work Permit, Visitor Visa and some types of Permanent Residence (PR) applications. In addition, candidates applying under Express Entry, including those under the Enhanced Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), will be able to track the progress of their application. This feature may also be useful for those applying for family sponsorship to bring a spouse or dependent child to Canada.
This tool can check the status of the main four components of the application. It includes Eligibility, Medical Exam, Background Check and Biometrics. Based on these details the applicant will be able to know at which stage his application is being reviewed and which process has been completed.
The tracker may show different statuses for different stages of the application. If the status shows ‘Not Started’, it means that the review of the relevant stage has not started yet. ‘Waiting on You’ means requiring additional information or documents from the applicant. ‘In Progress’ indicates that part of the application is still under review. While ‘Completed’ means the respective process has been completed. On the other hand, a status such as ‘Not Applicable’ or ‘Exempt’ may mean that the applicant is not required to complete the relevant stage.
Apart from the different stages of the application, information about its overall status can also be found. It may indicate whether the application has been received, is being processed or has been closed. As per the information available, the details on the tracker are also regularly updated. However, the exact time frame of the update and the features available for each type of application should be confirmed from the official portal.
Applicants have to sign in to the relevant IRCC online service to check the status of their application. As per available options, applicant can use GCKey username and password or supported sign-in method. Application number and Unique Client Identifier (UCI) number may be required to get application details. By using these details the applicant will be able to get information about the stage of his application.
For people applying to study, work or obtain permanent residence in Canada, it is important to know the progress of the application. Such a tracker can help in understanding the different stages of the application and if additional documents are required. However, application status tracker does not guarantee visa or PR approval. Applicants should check the availability and applicable conditions on IRCC official website before availing any new facility.
