The country’s Election Commission announced on Sunday that ballot boxes will also be placed in India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia for the Maldives vote. For this, around 11,000 applications for re-registration were received at various polling stations.
The six-day period for people to shift their polling stations for the April 21 parliamentary polls ended on Saturday, media reports quoted the Election Commission’s notification as saying. Ballot boxes for the island nation’s elections will also be placed in Kerala’s capital Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), Colombo in Sri Lanka and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the election body said. Because at least 150 people will re-register to vote in each of the three.
Polling will be held in Thiruvananthapuram
According to media reports, Election Commission Secretary General Hasan Zakaria has said that enough people have registered in Sri Lanka and Malaysia as before and since then 150 people have registered in Trivandrum, India. So we have decided to install a ballot box there. The election body received 11,169 applications requesting re-registration at various polling stations during this period. According to a Malaysian media report, 1,141 forms have been rejected this time. 10,028 applications have been approved.
Election postponed due to Ramadan
Pointing out that the number of people re-registering this year was low compared to previous elections, Zakaria said there would be no polls in the UK, UAE and Thailand. Parliamentary elections in the nation were due to be held on Sunday, however, the official election date was postponed after an act was amended to avoid holding elections during the month of Ramadan, leading to parliamentary elections now being held on 21 April.
