A user on TikTok has shown us an amazing travel hack that will help you save space (and money) when you’re flying.
We all know the pain of having to shell out £60 for an extra cabin bag or be forced to put our bags in the hold for a fee at the gate.
Budget airlines make money from all the extras, and because we all need clothes, makeup, shoes, and whatever else when we go on holiday, they know we’ll pay for it.
TikTok user @anayotothe, known as Ayo, has shown us another way though, using a travel pillow.
In the video, she explains that her flight is in three hours and she is trying out this hack because she didn’t want to pay USD$60 for a carry on.
So, she bought a travel pillow for USD$9 and proceeds to open it up using the hidden zipper at the back.
She writes: ‘A few weeks ago, I saw a travel hack on TikTok for the budget airlines that don’t let you carry on a bag. Instead, you can use a travel pillow as additional storage.’
Ayo then takes out all the filling from the pillow and advises people to make sure they get a travel pillow that has a zipper for ‘easy stuffing’.
As she had clothes that wouldn’t fit in her backpack, most of them very lightweight as she was heading to Vegas, she stuffs them all into the travel pillow.
The video has nearly one million views, with many people commenting that they loved the hack and would be trying it.
One person wrote: ‘I’m not paying more for luggage than the flight cost so let me try this.’
Ayo posted a follow up video to confirm that she did make it onto the flight without paying extra for luggage, carrying just her backpack and travel pillow.
Some people thought the hack was too much hassle and suggested that people shell out to fly on an airline that does allow luggage at no extra cost or a lower cost than some budget airlines.
But, Ayo responded that it took her ‘five minutes’ to get the travel pillow and pack her stuff, and it was a very easy and cheap solution – especially when you’re travelling a short distance.
Ayo lives in the Bay Area so she didn’t want to pay a premium cost for flights that allowed extra luggage to fly such a short distance, which is likely the motivation behind most of us flying on EasyJet or RyanAir to Ireland, Spain, or Denmark.
Most flights will allow a ‘personal item’ such as a travel pillow or a small bag in addition to a backpack in the cabin at no extra cost.
