We interviewed the CEO and he gave us an on-site tour of one of their demolition projects in Wakefield. Very impressive is a understatement, everything is carefully planned and executed with precision. We received a clear understanding of how buildings are demolished and how the waste is dealt with.
Firstly the building is prepped this means stripping out the doors, plasterboard, valuable metals and any hazardous substances. The segregation process is organized by specialist bins on site, for example one bin for wood, another bin for plasterboard and another bin for metals.
The plasterboard is then taken to a specialist factory where this is recycled. The wood bin is taken to another factory, where this is reused and the metals is sold to the scrap yard.
The time it takes to strip the building is around 7 days. Once this phase is complete, the structure is demolished, section by section until the building is no longer in there.
They then brake out the slab of the building ( Footprint ) and the concrete is reused on other parts of the demolition site. Once that stage has been completed, the foundation are broken out ( Scrubbing ) and then the land is made good for the next stage which is build.
The entire demolition process was a joy to watch. The planning that goes into each demolition project is unique in every way.
We wasn’t told how much the particular demolition site in Wakefield was to complete, but I would say thousands of pounds. All the demolition equipment was almost new and was only used when required.
We have seen many demolition projects, but this was definitely one of the largest by far. Total Demolition offer house demolition too. The process remains the same, however the only charge was the size of the demolition machine.
Total Group Wakefield offer complete demolition services throughout Wakefield and we really enjoyed our site visit. At the time of our visit, they received a call to demolish a dangerous building and had to deploy a specialist team to deal with this. We would love to revisit some of the other projects that they deal with and very much look forward to dealing with them again.
