Commonwealth Games 2022 (Commonwealth Games 2022) The countdown has begun. The Games will be held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. But even before it begins, Indian players have been complaining of physical and mental problems. After Neeraj Chopra ruled out of Commonwealth Games 2022 due to physical injuries, Lovlina Borgohen (Lovlina Borgohain) A few days before the event complained of ‘mental harassment’ – raising a big question for health experts on the ground.
News9 has Dr. Spoke to Pratik Gupta, who practices at Orthopedic and Sports Med Center with Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Safdarjung Development Area. “Usually, sports medicine specialists, paramedics, physiotherapists and masseurs are appointed for teams and players.” However, he added, “Sports psychologists are also important for players but they are not always mandated.” Also known as mental conditioning coaches, psychologists should not be the ones who come for 15 days, because when you come for 15 days you only share the experience. Therefore, providing psychologists to players depends on whether the player is already seeking specialist help or not.
‘Players need a psychologist’
Dr. Gupta said, “If a player already has a psychologist, no other specialist is needed. But if they don’t have a psychologist, it is very important to have a psychologist on the ground. If a mental conditioning coach is constantly with a player, he can understand which areas are affecting his game.
The role of the health team
Sports medicine expert: Dr. Gupta defines an expert as someone who performs physical examinations and records the medical history of athletes. He examines injured athletes, outlines their treatment plan, and determines the athlete’s readiness for competition.
He also said, “Usually sports medicine specialist and orthopedic are one and the same, but for some sports, different specialists give authority.”
Physiotherapist: Physiotherapists help athletes affected by injury, disease, or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education, and counseling.
They help reduce pain and prevent athlete’s disease. Helps facilitate professional recovery, helping players start practice early.
Paramedics: Dr. Gupta said paramedics play a major role when it comes to handling injured players and various other responsibilities. With large-scale sporting events it is important for the paramedic to understand the care and transport needs related to key participants. In addition to individual plans for the field of play (FoP), paramedics must be familiar with hospital notification systems, communication infrastructure, mass casualty plans, mass fatality plans, syndromic surveillance plans, severe weather plans, evacuation procedures, and Incident plans such as security zone planning.
As a FoP team approach, an accurate and rapid assessment by a paramedic may be required based on the injury, existing symptoms, and patient history.
Sport Psychologist: “A sports psychologist is as important as a sport physiologist,” said Dr Gupta.
Many Indian players have complained about mental health
Highlighting the importance of having mental conditioning coaches in all sports in India, Dr. Gupta explained how a person with expertise in this field helps players cope better with their condition. Many players have complained of mental health issues even before Lovely. Former England opener Marcus Trescothick was the first high-profile cricketer to suffer mental health problems in 2006, forcing him to retire at the top of his game.
