According to The Athletic, former NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger has made the decision to compete in the Cup Series full-time beginning in 2019.
Allmendinger, a 40-year-old driver, will be operating the No. 16 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing. From 2007 until 2018, the veteran raced in the Cup Series, but due to his poor performance, he gave up racing.
Allmendinger had intended to work on cars and perform some broadcasting, but in 2019, Kaulig Racing recruited him to drive their Xfinity car, and he finally experienced some success on that circuit. He expanded his driving schedule after that, which was a wise move.
He won five times in the Xfinity Cup Series, twice each in 2020 and 2021. He also won the Xfinity Cup Series regular season championship in the same year, which gave him the confidence to compete in the NASCAR Cup series full-time.
Gosh, we’ve come so close to winning one (superspeedway race), and I feel like I keep losing them,” he remarked following the race. “I feared I might have sold it. I’m still learning and attempting to define what a lead that is too big is. However, Landon Cassill (a teammate of Kaulig’s) deserves all the praise. He continued to push me. He stayed at my side. That is what makes Kaulig Racing so fantastic. When you have teammates like Landon and Daniel (Hemric), you can be sure that they will accompany you wherever you go. I appreciate you, Landon.
